The skincare, hair, and makeup she can’t live without.

Navigating clean beauty is anything but straightforward. There are many variables to consider, including whether ingredients are nontoxic, organic, sustainably sourced, or vegan. Since the term clean beauty is not regulated by a governing body, it’s up to the shopper—a.k.a. you—to decide what’s most important. “Personally, I define clean beauty as wellness products that are free of harsh chemicals, have ingredient transparency, and are kind to skin,” says Natalie Pergar, licensed aesthetician and lead skincare trainer at Eminence Organic Skin Care. “I also look for clean beauty products from brands that have initiatives that give back to the community and environment,” she says. “I feel better knowing that the products I use are not only effective in addressing my skin concerns but also have a direct impact on the environment I live in,” she says. If you’re interested in building a clean beauty routine, Pergar recommends focusing on a few key factors: “Ask yourself what ‘clean’ means to you and your lifestyle, and [what’s best for] your skin and hair,” she advises. To help get you started, she’s sharing nine of her top picks.

This essence helps replenish moisture with a blend of birch water, reishi and snow mushrooms, and botanical collagen. She pats it onto damp skin after cleansing. “It helps prepare my dry skin for the rest of my routine by restoring my moisture levels before I apply my serum and moisturizer,” she says. All Eminence Organics products are free of components that could act as a carcinogen, irritant, or hormone disruptor. Nor do they include sodium lauryl sulfates, petroleum, parabens, or propylene glycol.

This formula pairs finely ground olive seeds (to manually buff away dead skin) with fruit-derived acids and enzymes (to gently dissolve surface debris like product buildup), offering a one-two punch of exfoliating power without irritation or redness. It’s buffered with monoi oil, which actively hydrates skin and leaves it looking firm and feeling soft. Pergar uses this cleanser day and night.

Pergar has used this nail-strengthening formula for years, both as a base coat under color and on its own for clear shine. “The name says it all—it helps keep my nails healthy while protecting them from future damage,” she says. The formula, which is packed with horsetail extract, biotin, and calcium, works to repair weak nails. The brand is “10-free,” meaning it does not include harsh chemicals such as formaldehyde, DBP, toluene, or camphor in products.

Antioxidants are effective in fighting the appearance of aging produced by sun exposure and pollution, so it’s no surprise that Pergar is a fan of this antioxidant-packed formula. “Two of the most important ingredients to have on the skin every day are vitamins C and E,” she says. “I use this lightweight serum every day before my moisturizer to help keep my skin looking bright, and combat the appearance of fine lines,” she says.

Pergar recently discovered this lip gloss, which has become a favorite to get a no-makeup look. “The texture of the jelly and sheer color tint are perfect,” she says. “I love that it’s made with plant-based ingredients, like apricot kernel oil and raspberry seed oil.”

To keep her blonde hair looking, well, blonde, Pergar turns to this purple-toned formula that’s free of sulfates, DEA, aldehydes, and formaldehyde. “About every two weeks, I love to brighten up my hair by adding this shampoo to my routine,” she says. “Not only does it do a great job as a wash, it also tones and keeps my hair hydrated.”

A clean, effective mascara was hard to find—until this formula came along. “Hands-down, this is my permanent go-to mascara,” says Pergar. “My lashes stay lifted throughout the day with no flaking, and it removes like a breeze.” She credits the blend of organic bee and carnauba waxes for its ability to weightlessly condition and coat each lash, and loves that the formula is made with 100 percent natural dye. It’s also cruelty-free, gluten-free, and ophthalmologist-tested to be safe for sensitive eyes.

To round out her no-makeup makeup look with the bonus of sun protection, Pergar reaches for this weightless tinted moisturizer. “It’s a 3-in-1 product that adds moisture via hyaluronic acid, tint via minerals, and contains mineral-based sunscreen SPF 30,” she says.

This formula is silicone-free, which can be a rarity among makeup primers. “I love that it’s a natural gel that helps smooth skin texture and maintain hydration, while being 94 percent natural, vegan, clean, cruelty-free, paraben-free, silicone-free, oil-free, fragrance-free, and even gluten-free,” she says.
