Former Peruvian President Francisco Morales Bermudez has died at age 100. The general was credited with leading Peru back to civilian government — but he also was convicted abroad of involvement in “dirty war” crimes. His son Remigio Morales says the former president died Thursday night “of complications due to his age.” Morales Bermudez overthrew a harder-line junta in 1975 and immediately allowed all political exiles to return. He oversaw democratic elections in 1980 that returned civilian rule. But Italian courts convicted him of involvement in the abduction of Argentine leftists who had been living in Peru and who vanished in the hands of their country's own dictatorship.

An attorney representing 30 women who have accused the Houston Texans of turning a blind eye to allegations that Deshaun Watson was sexually assaulting and harassing women during massage sessions says they have settled their legal claims against the team. Tony Buzbee, the women's attorney, says the terms of the settlements reached between each of the women and the Texans are confidential. Buzbee says while only one of the women had filed a lawsuit against the team, the others had also intended to make legal claims against the Texans before the settlements were reached.

Authorities say a girl who was dubbed Princess Doe after her remains were found 40 years ago in a New Jersey cemetery has been identified as a Long Island teenager. Prosecutors said Friday that charges have been filed against the man they believe killed 17-year-old Dawn Olanick, of West Babylon, New York. Lehigh Valley Live reported that authorities say Arthur Kinlaw tried to lure Olanick into prostitution and killed her after she refused. Her beaten remains were found in a cemetery in Blairstown. Kinlaw is now 68 and is in prison on two murder convictions. Information about a lawyer who could speak for him wasn't immediately available.

The Georgia prosecutor investigating potential criminal interference in the 2020 presidential election says in a published interview she's considering requesting that former President Donald Trump testify under oath to a grand jury. Meanwhile, several people who've been subpoenaed as part of the probe have received letters informing them they're at risk of being indicted. That's according to a person familiar with the matter who insisted on anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. The developments underscore the accelerating nature of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ investigation and the key decisions that may lie ahead for prosecutors who've been scrutinizing efforts by Trump and his allies to undo his election loss in Georgia.

Auston Trusty was loaned to second-tier Birmingham City from Arsenal for the 2022-23 season before the 23-year-old defender played his first game for the Gunners. Trusty transferred from Colorado to Arsenal in January, and then was loaned back to the Rapids and played 16 league matches for Colorado this season. Both Arsenal and Colorado are owned by Stan Kroenke. Trusty played for Philadelphia in 2018-19 before moving to Colorado.

A group of academics from Yale University and other schools says a plan by Florida health officials that likely would restrict Medicaid insurance coverage for gender dysphoria treatments for transgender people lacks any sound medical justification. The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration says puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and sex reassignment surgery haven't been proven safe or effective in treating gender dysphoria. Tom Wallace, the state’s deputy director of Medicaid, signed off on the report. The group of seven scientists and a law professor from Yale and other schools said in a report last week that the Florida’s agency’s conclusions are “incorrect and scientifically unfounded.”

Max Scherzer misses hitting. He misses pitching to pitchers. Yet the New York Mets right-hander is just fine with the full-time addition of the designated hitter to the National League as of this season, nearly 50 years after the American League adopted it. The three-time Cy Young Award winner says the biggest benefit of the change is that all of Major League Baseball is under one set of rules. All games include a DH in the lineup. The ballot for Sunday’s All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium included a DH for the NL. And runs per game are up in the NL in 2022.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens is scheduled to testify Wednesday in his ongoing child custody dispute with his ex-wife Sheena Greitens.

Welcome to The World Games, a sort of Island of Misfit Toys for a fascinating array of sports that are on the outside looking in at the Olympics. The 11-day, Olympic-style competition is being held in the United States for only the second time, at venues throughout Birmingham, Alabama. From air sports to wushu  — this is a showcase for sports that someday hope to shine on the Olympic stage. For Birmingham, it's a chance to show how far the city has moved from its ugly racial history by welcoming sports that few locals have ever seen — or understand.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Angie Craig’s reelection campaign had a $4.7 million war chest at the end of June, dwarfing that of her Republican challenger in what is expected to be Minnesota’s closest congressional race this year. Craig reported raising more than $1.4 million in the second quarter. The two-term congresswoman from Prior Lake is in a rematch with Republican Tyler Kistner, a Marine Corps veteran who’s also from Prior Lake and whom she defeated by just over 2 percentage points in 2020. Kistner reported raising $491,000 in the second quarter, finishing with a healthy $523,000 in cash on hand. The GOP hopes to flip the seat as it seeks to take control of the House.

Kentucky’s dominant Republican Party has achieved another long-sought goal. It has overtaken the Democratic Party in statewide voter registration. The Kentucky State Board of Elections announced Friday that the number of registered Republican voters stands at 1,612,060, compared with 1,609,569 Democrats. U.S. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell says his party’s registration advantage is something he never thought would happen. McConnell attributes his party’s achievement to decades of “hard work and grassroots efforts,” adding that “it’s just the beginning.” Republicans hold Kentucky’s U.S. Senate seats, five of six congressional seats, supermajorities in the legislature and most of the statewide constitutional offices.

NEW YORK — Actor Edward Norton is starring in a real-life drama about a community effort to save a beloved Bedford-Stuyvesant mansion from the wrecking ball.

Sen. Joe Manchin says Democrats should delay a broad economic package until more data on inflation is available later this summer. The pivotal West Virginia Democrat made his remarks Friday on a statewide talk radio show. His demand would jeopardize the measure’s fate and delay a showdown over the party’s top priorities until the cusp of November’s congressional elections. Manchin said that if party leaders want to plan votes on the measure this month, they should limit it to provisions curbing pharmaceutical prices, extending soon-to-expire federal health care subsidies and reducing federal deficits. Manchin's support is needed for Democrats to move legislation in the 50-50 Senate.

The Panthers suffered their second straight five-win season under coach Matt Rhule in 2021, leaving him on the hot seat as he enters his third season. Carolina again struggled with poor offensive line play and the inability to find stability at the quarterback position. Carolina started the offseason attempting to acquire Deshaun Watson. But after losing out to Cleveland. the Panthers traded for former Browns signal-caller Baker Mayfield, who will battle it out with Sam Darnold for the starting spot at training camp.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A new report from the state Department of Justice shows that while conditions in California’s federal immigration detention facilities have improved since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, they remain grim.

Shortly after last year’s Olympics, the urine samples of some six dozen athletes came back with traces of a banned stimulant. Career-altering penalties loomed. But they were avoided thanks to some nimble sleuthing by antidoping scientists in the U.S. and Germany. The scientists discovered the stimulant could be found in an ingredient present in an over-the-counter sunscreen. Increasingly sensitive instruments designed to detect banned substances have the ability to pick up increasingly minuscule amounts of those substances in an athlete’s system. In some cases, athletes ingest them intentionally. But in a growing number of instances, the banned drugs enter their systems in completely unintentional ways. Like through sunscreen or contaminated food and prescription drugs.

Moldova received about 600 million euros in pledges at a donors conference to help the tiny country overcome rising inflation and the impact of Russia’s war in Ukraine. More than 500,000 refugees have fled to Moldova which borders Ukraine since the Russian invasion on Feb. 24. The situation has put a huge strain on Moldova's resources. The country is Europe’s poorest country and is looking to forge closer ties with the West. Moldova is also fully dependent on Russian gas supplies with prices hiking four-fold in the last year and is now contending with skyrocketing inflation. The Moldova Support Platform donor meeting Friday was held in Romanian capital Bucharest.

AUSTIN, Texas — Gubernatorial hopeful Beto O’Rourke raised $27.63 million between Feb. 20 and June 30, the most a state-level candidate in Texas has ever raised in one reporting period, his campaign said Friday.

Gov. Tom Wolf has signed legislation to increase penalties for motorists who have multiple DUI convictions. The bill he signed Monday is aimed at ending what critics call Pennsylvania’s “revolving door” for the most serious drunk drivers. The state Senate passed the final version last week after a couple of attempts to get the bill through the Legislature. The new law takes effect in November and increases penalties for some offenders who receive a third or subsequent DUI conviction. The bill was inspired by the death of a 45-year-old Delaware County woman who was killed in 2019 by a five-time drunk driver.

Filmed in Columbus, Ohio, “Poser” is a frequently fascinating look at the nature of identity and the role young people play in creating themselves.

In Israel, smartphones have become a volatile issue in the Haredi, or ultra-Orthodox, community. In April the country's communications minister made it easier for Haredi to use the devices without the knowledge of their rabbis, raising tensions within the Haredi community and between them and the rest of Israeli society. Several stores that sell smartphones and other digital technology near Mea She’arim, Jerusalem’s largest ultra-Orthodox neighborhood, have been trashed. Customers have been assaulted, and riots have broken out in nearby streets. Haredi Jews make up 12.6% of Israel’s population, or 16% of Israeli Jews, and are one of the country’s fastest-growing communities.

A bipartisan group of Florida members of Congress called on the Biden administration Friday to “redesignate and extend” Temporary Protected Status, a humanitarian protection that shields people from deportation, to eligible Nicaraguan already residing in the United States.

Josh Allen's emergence as one of the NFL's top young quarterbacks gives the Buffalo Bills hope for the Super Bowl in this upcoming season. The biggest question mark facing the two-time AFC East champs entering training camp is how smoothly Allen and his high-powered offense can transition under first-time coordinator Ken Dorsey. The Bills promoted Dorsey from QBs coach to take over after Brian Daboll was hired to coach the New York Giants. On defense, all eyes are on how much offseason addition Von Miller can improve what was a middling pass rush. The Bills open camp in Pittsford, New York, on July 24.

The Houston Texans look to Davis Mills as their answer at quarterback after finally moving on from Deshaun Watson in a trade to Cleveland this offseason. Coach Lovie Smith takes over after David Culley was fired after just one season where the team went 4-13. He takes over a team that looks to improve with a boost from multiple high draft picks led by CB Derek Stingley, the third overall pick in the draft, and OL Kenyon Green, chosen at No. 15. RB Marlon Mack joins the team, hoping to help turn around a running game that ranked last in the NFL in each of the past two seasons.

Tiger Woods may have played his final round of a British Open at St. Andrews. He received an emotional sendoff worthy of the occasion. Woods shot a 75 and missed the cut. But that's not what Friday was all about. Crowds got larger and louder as he neared the end. Woods crossed the Swilcan Bridge and did not stop to pose like other legends before him have done. He kept walking. Woods says this will not be his last British Open. He just doesn't know if he'll be healthy enough to play when it returns to St. Andrews.
