WHEN IT COMES to manicures, most everyone is fluent in French. Traditionally defined as a neutral nail edged in white, the French manicure has fallen in and out of fashion since its 1970s inception. Until lately it had been definitively out, associated with 2000s-era high-school proms and tawdry mall culture. But like low-rise jeans and other aughts styles, the French has returned—though it might look a bit different now than it did on “The Hills.”

Women are updating the simple, snowy tip by changing its shape or employing color and pattern. “There are so many possibilities,” said Brittney Boyce, a Los Angeles manicurist whose clients ask for everything from two-tone tips to periwinkle waves.
