While aging is both an inevitable and beautiful thing, one great way to highlight your features over 50 is revamping your beauty routine, and the tools you use. We checked in with a professional makeup artist and expert for her favorite affordable and quality brands, tools and products— including contour sticks, lipsticks, eyeshadows and more— to use on mature skin. Read on for tips, suggestions and insight from professional makeup artist Mary Winkenwerder, and find which brands and products can best highlight your skin (after all hitting the big 5-0 is an accomplishment to celebrate!)

Before getting into specifics when it comes to makeup, Winkenwerder explains the importance of a healthy and consistent skincare routine over 50. “Transitioning into a new skincare and makeup phase of life can be confusing and costly,” she acknowledges, “Understanding the new needs of your skin is the first step toward solutions.” To find what works best for you, experts recommend visiting a dermatologist, and when it comes to makeup, “if you want great makeup results, your skin needs to be healthy and healthy-looking,” Winkenwerder stresses. If you have a skincare routine that you are satisfied with, she recommends the following brands and products:

These two brands offer great quality, affordable products for mature beauties, Winkenwerder notes, and are also available at stores like CVS Pharmacy, Target, Walmart, etc. She suggests giving the following products in particular, a try:

This product from NYX glides on the eyelid and can easily be used for blending, smudging, or just a classic, clean line. The product formula (the part that produces the lines around eye features) in retractable eye pencils is “generally softer and gentler when applied,” Winkenwerder explains. “The eye areas are delicate,” she adds. The tissues, she says, can “become damaged when extra pressure or certain types of sharp and hard textures are pressed against them.” Over time, hard makeup applications on delicate face areas can cause “skin stretching and lead to unwanted wrinkling,” which products like these— including Wet n Wild’s ‘Mega Last Breakup-Proof Retractable Eyeliner’— won’t cause.

To add instant radiance to your makeup look and emphasize your cheekbones, Winkenwerder recommends using NYX’s ‘Born To Glow Liquid Illuminator Creamy Shimmer Highlighter.’ This product, she points out, comes in a liquid rather than a powder form, which will not draw attention to wrinkles like the latter can. “This product is a highlighter and so much more,” she says, suggesting to “use any of the colors to amplify the freshness of your face features while using less makeup.” For the best results, she instructs to “apply to the eyelids for sheer, natural-looking eye makeup.” This, she says, will help you get that “I-just-woke-up-like-this beautiful finish,” and you can “wear it alone or under your foundation.”

From classic 90s lipstick shades to its long-lasting legacy, this also affordable brand is a tried-and-true, reliable one at any age, Winkenwerder notes. She specifically points out the greatness of this brand’s eyeshadows, which can be used to conceal— rather than emphasize— wrinkling.

Cream eyeshadows are notorious for “going on easily and producing flawless eye statements,” with little to no color, she explains. “They blend well and are virtually care-free once applied.” These two solutions are great for daily use, and the versatility of the Revlon cream color palette, Winkenwerder adds, “seems endless— creating eye lining, contouring, and smoldering statements.”

This brand can be found at stores like Sephora, Ulta Beauty, and more. Known for its quality and rich colors, Winkenwerder points to Tarte for blush for women over 50 specifically.

If you use blush regularly and love it, Winkenwerder says “Tarte offers a stick stain and a cream blush that produce perfection.” It allows for color building, she continues, so you can always get the right shade on the right features. “Use it to enhance all your features,” she says, “I love the versatility of the product.” It can be worn on the face and lips for a “uniform and natural-looking color statement.”

Winkenwerder gives two great lipstick suggestions from another trusted, iconic, affordable and ubiquitous brand. L’Oreal is a French cosmetics company with great anti-aging makeup products that are also available at drugstores, supermarkets, and online. When it come to lipstick, Winkenwerder suggests using the following:
