There’s nothing quite like a Hollywood glow, and who better to show us how to achieve it than the stars themselves? After spending endless hours in a make-up chair and under the glare of the spotlight, these royals of the red carpet have a few tips to share.

The real trick to achieving that flawless superstar look? “[It all comes down to a] combination of flawless application by the make-up artist and lights used by photographers and paparazzi,” reveals make-up artist Kristyan Low. And while most of us don’t have a camera crew at the ready, that doesn’t mean we can’t borrow from their little black book of expert tips.

“Celebrity make-up is all about enhancing the features of the celebrity,” Low tells Body+Soul. “Every celebrity has their strong suit, whether it’s a smoky eye or a bold lip. The make-up artist tailors their skills to suit each celebrity.”

A key trick is to concentrate on the base. “Prepping the skin, as make-up artists like to call it, is vital to flawless make-up,” Low explains, advising layering your skincare products and primer before applying your foundation.

“For that ‘sculpted’ look, using cream contour and highlight products will allow a seamless finish,” he adds. “You can always enhance your contours with a powdered product afterwards. Remember that less is more.”

Another expert tip is to “bake” make-up by applying a layer of fine powder, letting it sit and bake in the warmth of your skin, then dusting off the excess. “Baking the face with powder on areas where the make-up may shift or become oily is a great trick to ensure your make-up is ‘locked’ in and flawless,” says Low.

So what key products should be in your kit? Low recommends a classic red lipstick; an eyeliner in your preference of black, grey or brown; and a foundation that suits your skin tone and texture.

With celebrities crossing paths with make-up artists on a daily basis, it’s little wonder they pickup the best tips and tricks in the business – and even go into the business with their own make-up ranges – so here’s our pick of the best, straight from the perfectly made-up mouths of the stars.

Selena Gomez fluttery lashes look. Image: @selenagomez on TikTokSource:BodyAndSoul

This trick allows you to define your lower lashes with exact precision, so you can open your eyes and create a more fluttery effect.

Grab your favourite mascara and use the wand to load the pincer-end of a pair of tweezers with the product. Being very careful, use the pincers to dab the product on to your lower lashes (note: don’t grip the lash or you risk pulling it out). Gomez spaces out the mascara-loaded lashes along her lash line, for a fuller and more pronounced ’70s aesthetic.

This tip is perfect for anyone whose hand gets the wobbles when they go to do their eyeliner wing. The technique uses a forgiving first layer to get the shape right, and then you simply retrace your steps from there.

Use a thin angled eyeliner brush loaded with some dark eyeshadow to lightly “sketch” the winged line, says Grande. Thanks to eye shadow being easier to manipulate than liquid eyeliner, this means you can simply use a pointed Q-tip to neaten up any mistakes. Once you’re happy with the outline, use a pen-style liquid liner to solidify the shape. Be confident with the strokes for an even line, like Grande’s.

Rihanna's natural brow look. Image: @Fenty Beauty By Rihanna on YouTubeSource:BodyAndSoul

Eyebrows are the “frame” for the face, says Rihanna, adding, “No matter what, if you get that wrong, everything else falls short.”

Fill in the middle of the brow normally, using short strokes with a pencil and paying extra attention when it comes to defining the arch and tail. Then switch to a slightly lighter brow pencil for the inside of the brow to create a natural gradient that will look anything but “fake”, which the singer describes as her pet peeve.

Drew Barrymore's rosy glow look. Image: @drewbarrymore on TikTokSource:BodyAndSoul

Having trouble finding the perfect blush for your skin tone? This technique will let you reuse the colour of your favourite lipstick for a pulled together, rosy glow.

Barrymore dots a moisturising lipstick straight from the bullet on to the apples of her cheeks and then blends it out with her finger. Try playing with the placement depending on your face shape. The “apples” will make your cheeks look fuller, while cheekbone placement will give a more lifted effect.

Keen to make your lips look fuller without obviously overdoing it with the liner? This trick creates the pillow-lip aesthetic without the surgery.

Choose a lip liner that’s slightly darker (and slightly more brown) than your lip tone. Bieber uses the Make Up Forever Artist Colour Pencil. “I actually only over-line right here,” she explains on TikTok, gesturing to her cupid’s bow, “and the rest I follow my lip shape.”

Lastly, dab a slightly lighter lipstick shade on with your finger – Bieber uses Charlotte Tilbury lipstick in Pillow Talk – and you’re done.

Jessica Alba's long-lasting lightweight base look. Image: @jessicaalbaSource:BodyAndSoul

The brainchild of Australian beauty expert Chloe Morello, this long-lasting, non-cakey technique is favoured by Jessica Alba for a glowy finish. It uses lots of setting spray and minimal product in one layer to achieve a lightweight but seamless base.

Apply all your cream products to your face at once: foundation, concealer, cream blush and contour. Spray your face with setting spray to keep the product moving and to infuse the face with the staying power of the spray, and then blend, starting from light (concealer) to dark (contour).

This hack creates a flawless contoured base without harsh lines. “It looks more natural and makes your skin look like it’s tanned and glowing from within,” Woodall tells Body+Soul. “I never wear a heavy, thick foundation. [With this tip] you can see enough, but it doesn’t look fake.”

Woodall completes her normal skincare routine, then adds bronzer and highlighter where the sun hits. Then she applies a tinted moisturiser with SPF over the top, specifically her Trinny London BFF Cream Skin Perfector SPF 30. “It gives me that really nice glowy, hydrated, tanned skin.”
